Discover Chinese Swords

Posted on30/10/2025

China’s sword heritage spans thousands of years — from bronze-age legends to the elegant forms seen in martial arts today. At CAESARS, we offer a curated look into how design, function, and craftsmanship evolved through the dynasties. While our swords are not all replica-grade museum reproductions, each piece pays tribute to the distinctive styles and motifs of its time — a perfect starting point for new and seasoned collectors.

Spring & Autumn Period 春秋時期

A time of great refinement in bronze weaponry, where swords symbolized both power and prestige. Straight, double-edged blades like the iconic Goujian Jian are remembered for their elegant forms and impressive resilience.

Han Dynasty 漢朝

The Han era perfected the jian — balanced in form, noble in character, and carried by scholars and warriors alike. Its refined lines and solid steel construction set the standard for centuries to follow.

Tang Dynasty 唐代

The Tang Dao was the official sabre of the Tang army, documented in 《唐六典》 and classified into Yi Dao (仪刀), Zhang Dao (障刀), Heng Dao (横刀), and Mo Dao (陌刀). The commonly referenced Heng Dao traces its roots to the Han ring-pommel sabre, enhanced with wider blades and two-hand control for superior combat performance on land and sea. It later grew into a mark of military rank.

This interpretation blends Tang military style with a Han-inspired ring pommel — a tribute to historical evolution.

Ming Dynasty 明代

Military reforms led by generals like Qi Jiguang (戚继光) emphasized close-quarters formations and decisive cutting power. This era saw the rise of long sabres capable of sweeping strikes against cavalry and tight infantry formations. Among them, the Miao Dao excelled on the battlefield and continues to influence modern martial arts techniques preserved from those manuals.

Republican Era 民國時期

The Zhong Zheng Jian (中正剑) was a prestigious honour within the Republic of China, personally awarded by Chiang Kai-shek to outstanding Whampoa Military Academy cadets and individuals of exceptional merit. With very few ever granted, it became a rare symbol of loyalty and recognition among National Revolutionary Army officers.

Today 當今時代

Contemporary Taiji swords are crafted for agility and fluidity — perfect for forms, practice, and performance. Lightweight and responsive, they carry forward tradition in movement rather than warfare.
