Hannya (般若) is a Sino-Japanese word for "prajna", or wisdom. There was a tradition stating that this mask was named after an artist monk Hannya-bō (般若坊), who had perfected its creation. Another explanation is that the artist would require a great amount of wisdom to create this mask.
The Hannya mask (full version) represents jealous female demon, serpent and sometimes dragon in noh and kyōgen Japanese traditional theater plays and Shinto Kagura ritual dances. Despite its relatively dark appearance, it is considered a symbol of good luck and are often used to ward off evil.
