凤凰 Fenghuang are mythical birds from Chinese mythology. Originally, males were called feng and females were called huang. Because it is a combination of the male and female, the fenghuang contained a mixture of yin and yang, which represents perfect balance and harmony, making it an ideal symbol for wedding ceremonies. Since the Qin dynasty, fenghuang had blurred into a single feminine entity to be paired with the Chinese dragon. 凤翥龙翔 fèng zhù lóng xiáng (lit. soaring phoenix and dragon) is a Chinese idiom to describe an extraordinary atmosphere. 凤 Feng is also commonly found in female given names.
Fenghuang has other very positive connotations - virtue and grace. During the Huang dynasty, it symbolised the Empress when paired with the Chinese Dragon that represented the Emperor and that there was no darkness in her court. Should the fenghuang ever left her court, it meant that her court was no longer pure.
