Description

Nurhaci 努尔哈赤 was a Jurchen chieftain who rose to prominence in the late 16th century in Manchuria. A member of the House of Aisin-Gioro, he reigned as the founding khan of the Later Jin dynasty of China and is regarded as the founding father of the Qing Dynasty, which would later grow to have a profound impact on Chinese history, culture and politics over the next two centuries.

Due to his meritorious service in defending against the Japanese and "protecting the border," he was promoted to the rank of Dragon-Tiger General 龙虎将军. After entering the capital, Nurhaci humbly received the Dragon and Tiger General Sword 龙虎将军剑, a coronet, an imperial edict, and other rewards from the Ming Emperor. From then on, he became the border guard minister of Liaodong for the Ming Dynasty, leading the Jurchen tribe in service to the Ming court.

Nurhaci's Dragon and Tiger General Sword is a typical Ming-style sword. It features a flower-shaped pommel and together with the guard which has a dragon at each end, are engraved with auspicious patterns such as celestial officials, divine deer, and cranes. The decorative motifs convey meanings like "celestial officials bestowing blessings," "promotion and prosperity," and "auspicious jade rabbit." The scabbard is also adorned with engravings of other auspicious creatures, making this a truly symbolic official sword.
