In Chinese art, the Four Gentlemen (四君子) is a collective term referring to four plants: the plum blossom (梅), the orchid (兰), the bamboo (竹), and the chrysanthemum (菊). This term is compared to Confucian junzi, or "gentlemen". This is a recurring theme in artistic creation for their symbolism of uprightness, purity, humility and perseverance against the harsh conditions.
The Four Gentlemen would later on be adopted by artists in East Asia as they also represent the four seasons aptly.
