Also known as the Island of the Dragonfly (Akitsushima), Akitsu is an old word for Tonbo (Dragonfly). The dragonfly is also known as the "victory insect" due to its hunting prowess and also because it is known to never retreat. In modern culture, dragonfly is often associated with the rice paddies of Japan and the nostalgia of growing up in a farming community tied to the land. Hence, there is a folk belief that the dragonfly is the soul of a departed ancestor who has come back to visit their loved ones.
