Ieyasu Tokugawa was the founder of the Tokugawa Shogunate of Japan that ruled Japan until the Meiji Restoration in 1868. He was known as one of the three "Great Unifiers" of Japan, alongside Oda Nobunaga and Toyotomi Hideyoshi. During his reign, he implemented the bakuhan system (bakuhan taisei 幕藩体制) to keep the daimyo and samurai in check.
