Zi Yun Tang Jian 紫云唐剑

The Tang Dynasty was a period characterized by bold innovation. Tang swords 唐剑 brought an end to the nearly thousand-year-long tradition of ring-pommel designs (环首设计) that had been popular since the Han Dynasty. Simultaneously, Tang swords departed from the Zhou sword style, which had been passed down for 1500 years since the Spring and Autumn period, creating a unique and elegant sword form that continued to influence future generations up to the present day. 

The symbolism of clouds held multifaceted significance. Viewed as auspicious symbols, clouds were associated with good fortune and prosperity, believed to bring blessings in Chinese culture. Furthermore, clouds played a pivotal role in expressions of imperial authority, often featured in imperial art where the emperor, likened to a dragon with control over the weather, asserted divine mandate through the depiction of clouds. Additionally, the Tang Dynasty's emphasis on harmony between humans and nature was embodied in the cloud motif, representing a connection with the natural world and the pursuit of balance in the cosmic order.

The design of Tang swords had matured significantly by the end of the dynasty. The fittings would feature the iconic three-lugged cloud-shaped design, with a widened hilt guard serving as a handguard in the shape of clouds. The scabbard is adorned with intricate decorations, segmented ring bands, and notably, an ear attachment had appeared on the scabbard mouthpiece.
