Description

This is a replica of a Roman Dagger from the Julius Caesar period, also known as a pugio which has been finished in nickel. This particular replica has fascinating history behind it, the term pugio derives from the Latin word pugnus which means fist, the word itself refers to the shape of the hand in the closed position that is necessary to hold this Roman dagger. It was a dagger used by Roman soliders as a sidearm, officials of the empire took to wearing ornate daggers in the performance of their offices, and some would wear concealed daggers as a defense against contingencies. The dagger was a common weapon of assassination and suicide, it was used by the conspirators who stabbed Julius Caesar.
